As well as an award-winning range of consumer laptops, Samsung also manufactures business machines, of which the P580 is an example. As well as offering strong everyday performance, its usability and business features are also great, although we found portability to be a little disappointing.
If you’re after a laptop for transporting valuable files and folders, security for your data must be a priority. While the P580 only features 320GB of storage, it of a free-fall sensor. This recognizes when you’ve dropped the laptop and docks the drive’s read heads, preventing them from scratching the actual disk on which your data is stored, to protect your files.
We would have expected a fingerprint reader for added security, but one hasn’t been included. Instead a host of automatic back-up security features comes included and, once configured, ensures that, should the laptop crash or be damaged, you’ve got the best possible chance of recovering your data. Sleep & Charge technology is also included, which lets you charge USB powered devices when the laptop is off.
Build quality is great and this is a very comfortable laptop to use. The ls.6-inch screen features a TFT screen coating so, like the Medion, it doesn’t suffer distracting reflections when used in bright light. Unlike the Medion, however, it’s very bright and produces vivid colors that will please design professionals. The mock brushed-aluminum chassis is attractive and well put together and its matt finish makes it easy to keep clean. So it is great for those who don’t want to be constantly cleaning their laptop.
Crucially the keyboard is excellent. It features a firm typing action and the keys travel a very comfortable distance. A dedicated numeric keypad is included and will be welcome by the business person who regularly inputs data.
Average power Performance, courtesy of an Intel Core i3 processor, isn’t quite as good as its rivals in this group, where you’ll find exclusively Core is processors. There’s not much in it, however, and the averagebusiness person will find more than enough power for checking emails and correcting spreadsheets, for example.
Surprisingly, graphical performance is the best in this group and you’ll be able to carry out photo editing as well as gaming. VGA and HDMI video outs let you connect to analogue and digital monitors and a Serial port has also been included for attaching older technologies. The P580packs good features and great usability. We would have liked a Core is processor, but the powerful graphics compensate somewhat.
